Nationally, sport management professionals are facing a shortage of individuals willing to serve as interscholastic sport officials. This shortage may stem from time constraints, low pay, travel requirements, or stress resulting from fear of physical harm or unsportsmanlike behavior officials experience from players, fans, or coaches. The presentation shares the findings of an investigation of the experiences of rural interscholastic sport officials. Using a case study design researchers sought to understand the motivation, challenges, and reasons sport officials officiate and stop officiating. To aid sport administrators with recruitment efforts researchers also sought to understand current official's recommendations on ways to attract and keep new officials.
